Average Fees for IITs in India

For Indian students aspiring to study at one of the prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology  (IITs), the cost of tuition is a major consideration. We will take a look at the average fees for  IITs in India and discuss how this compares to other countries. Aspirants to IITs are required to pay an admission fee of Rs 10,000, as well as an annual tuition fee of Rs 2 lakh. However, many other expenses are associated with studying at an IIT, such as room and board, which can make the total cost much higher.

For example, at IIT Bombay, the total cost of attendance is estimated to be Rs 9.8 lakh per year. Compared to other countries, the cost of attending an IIT in India is relatively low. For example, Tuition fees at Ivy League universities in the United States can range from US$40,000 to over US$60,000 per year.  Considering the total cost of attendance, which includes room and board, books and supplies, and other expenses, the figure can be closer to US$75,000 per year. While studying at an IIT in India is not free, it is still a more affordable option for many students.

IIT

IIT stands for Indian Institute of Technology. IITs are the premier engineering institutions in  India and are known for their quality education and rigorous academic standards. In India, around 23 IITs are located. The average annual fee for an IITian is Rs. 2.5 lakhs and this includes all other expenses like tuition fees, hostel fees, and other expenses.

IITs offer various engineering courses, such as mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, etc. Admission to IITs is through the Joint Entrance  Examination (JEE Mains), which is conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education  (CBSE).

IITs are among the most prestigious and sought-after engineering institutions in India.  However, due to the high cost of attendance, not everyone can afford to study at an IIT. For many students, the cost of tuition, room, board, and other expenses can be a deterrent.

IITS in India

There are a total of 23 Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) in India. IITs are public engineering institutes that were established with the help of the Soviet Union. They offer undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctorate programs in various engineering disciplines. The average fee for IITs in India is Rs. 9.8 lakhs per year.

The first IIT was established in 1951 and is located in Kharagpur, West Bengal. It was followed by the establishment of other IITs in Bombay, Madras, Kanpur, Delhi, Guwahati,  Roorkee, Bhubaneshwar, Gandhinagar, Hyderabad, Jodhpur, Indore, Mandi, Patna, Tirupati,  Palakkad, Varanasi, and Visakhapatnam. The newest IITs are located in Dhanbad (2016),  Goa (2016), Jammu (2016), and Dharwad (2017).

IITs offer four-year Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) programs in various engineering disciplines such as mechanical engineering, computer science, and engineering, electrical engineering, civil engineering, etc. Admission to these programs is through the Joint Entrance  Examination – Advanced (JEE-A), which is conducted by the Seven Zonal Coordinating  Boards (ZCBs). Candidates who qualify for JEE-A are eligible for admission to IITs.

The Master of Technology (M.Tech) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programs are also offered by IITs. Admission to these programs is based on the candidate’s performance in the  Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE).

IITs also offer dual-degree programs, wherein students can earn a B.Tech and an M.Tech  degree in five years, or a B.Tech and an MBA degree in six years.

IITs have been ranked among the top engineering colleges in India by various ranking agencies such as the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF), India Today,  Outlook India, etc.

Fees structure for IITs in India

Several many factors contribute to the fees charged by Indian Institutes of  Technology (IITs). The cost of living and studying in India is relatively low when compared to developed countries, which helps keep IIT fees affordable. Additionally, the Indian government subsidizes a portion of IIT tuition fees. As a result, IITs can charge lower tuition rates than many other engineering schools around the world.

The table below provides an overview of the average tuition fees charged by IITs in India:

  1. IIT BOMBAY – Rs 8 Lacs
  2. IIT DELHI – Rs 8.6 Lacs
  3. IIT MADRAS – Rs 8.7 Lacs
  4. IIT KHARAGPUR – Rs 9.4 Lacs
